Storage Solutions

To ensure the performance, availability, and reliability of your Information Technology systems requires appropriately designed data storage solutions. Every organisation has different requirements based upon the nature of the applications they use, the type/s of data that are being accessed, the importance of the data, their operating budgets, and a range of other factors.

IBM Real-time Compression Appliance STN6500At the most obvious level, data backup solutions, including tape, optical drives (DVD, Blu-Ray) and ‘cloud backup’ are required by virtually every organisation. However, you may also need to review other aspects of your data storage, including the capacity, performance, and redundancy of your ‘online’ storage (typically Hard Disk Drives).

Technology such as SSD (solid state drives) has historically been expensive, and continues to cost considerably more than conventional Hard Disk Drives (HDD) per gigabyte, but offers substantial performance benefits. Storage vendors and solutions providers therefore have developed a range of solutions that allow us to build storage arrays and solutions using a combination of SSD, HDD, optical drives (e.g. DVD), and tape drives. These arrays may be further integrated in Storage Area Networks (SANs) or attached as Network Attached Storage (NAS).

Automated Tiered Storage capabilities can identify the most-used data and move it automatically to high-performing storage such as SSD and Flash memory, whilst demoting infrequently accessed data to lower-cost Hard Disk Drives or even on to backup media such as tape and optical (DVD) media. Appliances such as IBM’s Real-time Compression appliance can maximise the available storage capacity of a system without performance degradation.
